Czekając na nowy Dekameron. O fotografii cyfrowej w czasie pandemii

Trzy nagrody
Alchemia procesu, czyli  Nowe Pompeje
Tytuł Nigredo sięga do tradycji alchemii i teorii Carla Gustava Junga.
Cztery półpostacie z rogami ulegające nieokreślonemu rozpadowi, będące zwielokrotnioną, choć trudną do rozpoznania twarzą autorki. Przed nimi w magicznym kręgu światła pojawiają się symboliczne atrybuty przemiany: serce i czaszki zwierząt. Wszystko podlega transformacji.
Out of Reality.

XX wieku „mechanizmu uwodzenia”, który w karcie zgłoszenia opisała w interesujący sposób: „Czy połączone z maszyną do szycia fragmenty ciała kobiecego to hybryda świadoma swych uwodzicielskich mocy?

[i] K. Rosińska, korespondencja z K. Jureckim, Messenger, 16.05.20.

Waiting for new Dekameron. About digital photography during a pandemic
Three awards

Alchemy of the process, that is New Pompeii
The first place was awarded to Kamila Rosińska for her work under the mysterious title Nigredo (New Pompeii). Seemingly, this work is not very attractive in visual terms. But by examining its details and individual fragments we discover many intriguing signs and symbolic messages, which on the one hand arise from interest in shamanism and African animism, and on the other hand, are the reflection arising from the visit to the site of Pompeii, including the Villa of Mysteries with well preserved frescos on the initiation.
The title Nigredo reaches back to tradition of alchemy and the theory of Carl Gustav Jung. As the author wrote me, explaining the project’s title: „<blacking> [it is] the decay, rotting, which is about to divide something durable and non-durable, truth and illusion, so only the essence is left, the most durable and authentic element. The concept has been taken over by depth psychology, which identifies it as “the dark night of the soul” – painful, but still necessary confrontation, for deeper self-awareness with one’s shadow (meanings repressed from our consciousness). Nigredo always figuratively becomes a desert to me, a place of transformation, where anything is revealed to its essence, to the bone, where nothing can be hide – that is why the works under this heading are usually placed there”.[1]
What can we see in a panoramic view? Four half-figures with horns in their unspecified decomposition, being multiplied, yet difficult to recognize face of an author. Before them, within the magic circle of light, symbolic attributes of transformation appear: the heart and animal skulls. All of this is the subject of transformation. Some believe in the Jung transformation, i.e. the alchemical transformation against the nostalgic landscape. The work is ambiguous and it gives a lot thoughts on the fundamental values: the good and the evil, so as to make a final purification and fusion of contradictions at a higher level of consciousness.
Woman as a continued source of beauty?
The 2’nd place goes to Agnieszka Kot for the series entitled Planta ,which is a mature illustration of the phenomenon of femininity from artistic and formal point of view.
The photomontage technique served to show a variable female being, which was identified with vegetation. Of course, the idea itself takes the achievements of such famous artists like Sandro Botticelli, Alfons Mucha or Stanisław Wyspiański, who however, did not have time to fulfil himself in oil painting, only in a rapid pastel technique. The works of by Agnieszka Kot evolve in the melancholy concept, which is a meditation over the essence of beauty, its constancy and fleetingness. And even over its delusion, as these are photomontage works.
[2]
The series shows a cracked structure of skin in a form reminiscent of an old architectural tissue. A woman’s face can also be a face of mannequin or a cyborg. Femininity is changing and rapidly transforming, but is still an enigma. In this series, the author uses refined painting methods, including also some possibilities of abstraction. Dark background gives it a trait of mysteriousness in addition, as in the great masters of the Baroque: Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
I was particularly impressed by the work with the wreath of flowers, placed at the level of the mouth. It may be a metaphor for the women’s silence, also with the sacral trait, relating to the tradition of religious painting.
Ritual as a performance
Krzysztof Strzoda was awarded 3rd place for the most traditional referral to black and white and analogue photography, a triptych entitled Out of Reality. The jury fully agreed. If that work was assessed in the contest with different message, with no emphasis on the adjective „digital”, it would certainly win. Our contest held since 1997 is about to emphasise primarily the attributes of „digitalization” of a picture.
Looking at Out of Reality we are watching the same scenes as from the film by Andriej Tarkowski, in which the reality of a ritual being played, overlaps our memories concerning religiousness and everyday life. The triptych shows a new version of sacrifice, maybe also the redemption, or some scenes played in a form of the Medieval plays, known from different stories.
I am somewhat puzzled by the body-painting used on the bodies shown, but it has to be also recognised the expression of the face of some figures (i.e. of the photograph Krzysztof Szlapa) and three pictures full of pathos, which do not reveal us the meaning of the presented narration, but rather hide it. As if we were stealthily overlooking the fragments of mysterious mystery, which we face here, as evidenced by the outfits of figures resembling the Gothic perizonium of the Crucified Christ.

Three equal honour awards

Polish Modernistic climates
Natalia Rex received an award for four works which for her four works, which on
the one hand represent the original, drawing style, and on the other, they show too strong entanglements into illustration, as if they were, for example, book illustrations. The literary symbolism of the skeletons, skulls, home-ruins presented, is to show the fleetingness of youth, within the meaning of how the artists of XIX i XX c. of the Art Noveau called it, for example Józef Mehoffer or Stanisław Wyspiański. There is nevertheless a need to seek some more recent meanings, adequate for XXI c.
The threat appears
Mirosław Iskra received another distinction for his three painting works. Its overall mood reminds pictures of Karol Palczak – the winner of the most important Polish painting contest: Bielska Jesień organized in Bielsko Biała. The painting of talented Palczak, as
I presume, has been awarded due to political implications, not an artistic ones.
[3]
Visually attractive works of Iskra are difficult to bring together through a coherent idea. The most convincing is the picture with a burning human being, and less are three figures in the shadow, while the least convincing are three figures floating upwards. That attempt to develop a metaphor failed, or it was not understood by the jury. Maybe it was too complex? Nevertheless, the works of Iskra on the danger and alienation, are worth attention.
Disease as a metaphor of time, in which we live
The last statutory honour award was received by Jakub Pietrzak for his photograph entitled Anointed. The author presented a meaningful work, that directly illustrates
a pandemic problem, although we do not know what was the idea of its development. The work can also serve as i.e. the poster to cope with Covid-19, as it shows a specific picture on the attempt to cope with, or maybe a sheer helplessness against pandemic.
Honorary awards
The special award of the Director of the Regional Culture Centre in Częstochowa was received by Małgorzata Kozakowska for her work entitled Animizm distinguished with showing a figure of biological kind, as from the Awatar movie, which is surely a huge challenge for humankind. The artist, who has been taking part in the Cyberfoto contest for several years, presented the work as a new technological solution, bordering on painting and photography, made on wood, what was also appreciated by the jury.
I granted my own award, to note a new personality in Polish photography, who to me is  Joanna Borowiec to me. I remember her interesting works on the fragility of any life from the 5’th Piotrkowskie Biennale Sztuki (Piotrków Trybunalski, 2019). In the diptychs presented in Częstochowa, she tried to define XD Generation, that is children between 8 and 14 years, who cannot already live without Internet, which had become not just entertainment, but a main communication method and a way of life. Is it a lost generation? Certainly not, but their knowledge of the world, and then the life itself, shall be completed with new quality, not only sociological, but also contextual one.

In the age of pandemic
It is worth mentioning that also feministic works of Magalena Samborska were closely linked to the rewarding. These were on the investigated by her since the 90’s of 20th century, „the mechanism of seduction”, which she described in the application card in a very interesting way: „Do the parts of the human body connected with sewing machine, constitutes a hybrid aware of its seducing powers? Maybe a temptress is not the prime mover of this mechanism. Stuck inside ornaments, with manual skills associated with her and “coquettish tasks”. It should be noted very intimate works of Krzysztof Zając and, as usual,  interestingly arranged painting-like compositions of Eugeniusz Nurzyński, who analyses the various styles of modern life from the beginning of 20th century.
In a couple of years or even in few decades, the ongoing pandemic will be also considered in artistic works, and also within a scope of photography, because in critical or extreme situations,  the artistic creativity has a chance to print its existential, or in the contrary, the documentary recording, being an attempt to portrait the atmosphere of everyday but also tragic life, or vice versa – keeping away from thinking imaginatively and subconsciously.[4]

[1] K. Rosińska, correspondence with K. Jurecki, Messenger, 16.05.20. The Artist in 2016 at the Cyberfoto, already received my honorary award. Because of this, I am glad of the award, as her achievements are very original.
[2] It is worth noting, that such a popular aesthetic filled through its inscription with the figure of a woman in different painting structures, has appeared at our contest several times already, i.e. in distinguished works of Natalia Zakrocka, in 2015.
[3] That is why i.e. the works of Bartłomiej Otocki were underestimated,  or the interesting „painting about painting” of Piotr Ambroziak was not listed at the exhibit,  focusing on the realism, often naïve, or on a new pop (Jan Możdyński). As a result, which has become a tradition already, the hybrid view of the Polish Painting appeared, with too volatile aesthetics, in awarded works over recent years.
[4] Reflections after the jury session on 09.05.2020 can be seen in the movie by Sławomir Jodłowski Cyberfoto 2020 on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/126962597370647/videos/1471828736320231/.

Joanna Borowiec, Pokolenie XD, (nagroda przewodniczącego jury)

Magdalena Samborska, Mechanizm uwodzenia
